Rowan Prep School

On Friday, I visited Rowan Prep School in Claygate to speak to the Year 6 leavers, at the invitation of Year 6 co-ordinator Mrs Lewis and head teacher Mrs Clarke. I talked to the girls about the role of a Member of Parliament, and the kinds of things the job includes, like helping individuals with housing and other issues, and championing community interests a a whole, whether investment in school places or our community hospitals. I also talked about what MPs do up in Parliament itself, from debating issues to making new legislation, like cutting income tax in the last Budget.

We had a lively question and answer session afterwards, with the girls raising issues from junior doctors’ contracts, to the death penalty, and next month’s EU Referendum. It was great to see young people so eagerly engaged in politics and international issues, with a very mature outlook on key topics. I wish all of the girls the best as they move on to their next schools.
