Unfair government funding has led to neglect - even in a relatively affluent area like Elmbridge. In 2009 Dr Helen Bowcock wrote a report, Hidden Surrey, commissioned by the Surrey Community Foundation. It highlighted pockets of neglect throughout the county amidst higher income areas - but also found a range of local charities, across Surrey, stepping up where the last government had failed.
I have visited some of the inspirational community groups doing invaluable work across Elmbridge - like Lower Green Community Association, our Citizens Advice Bureaus, Walton Charity, Whiteley Retirement village, Hersham Youth Center and Sunbury & Walton Sea Cadets. These are just a few examples of the groups - and community spirit - that I support locally.
Sport also plays an important part in local life - giving youngsters a positive outlet and discipline, bringing families together and promoting a stronger sense of community. I have been down to support Esher and Cobham rugby clubs, Surbiton hockey club and I train at The Foley Boxing club in Weston Green. Whether it is promoting healthier living - or getting children out from behind television and computer screens - I am keen to promote sport and support community clubs across the constituency.
