Celebrating a Local Health Hero

On Wednesday, I attended ONE Campaign’s Health Heroes Parliamentary Reception to introduce Vreni Oleram. Vreni runs the Esher College Africa Trust, which raises funds to support the Dope School in rural Zimbabwe to help pay school fees for children whose parents have died of HIV/AIDS. The money also helps buy necessities, such as pencils, and even shoes in some cases, as many of them walk miles to and from school every day.

Vreni has always had a passionate interest in Development and during her early years as economics teacher at Esher College, she established a link with the Dope School in Zimbabwe, and has been helping children there for over twenty years.

The Health Heroes Parliamentary Reception highlighted the work of five ‘Health Heroes’ who are campaigning, working against or personally affected by global health issues. I was humbled and honoured to introduce Vreni and highlight the amazing work that she’s done.
